ILLUSTRATED TALK

“WHERE DID IT GET US?: POST – REVOLUTION DISENCHANTMENT IN JOHN McGAHERN’S FARM WRITINGS”

SPEAKER:

Dr. HEATHER LAIRD

Senior Lecturer in Department of English, UCC

John McGahern’s oeuvre famously features characters who are disillusioned with the society that the Irish national struggle has given rise to and dissatisfied with their place in that society. While such characters are clearly relevant to an examination of disenchantment with post-revolutionary Ireland in McGahern’s writings, the lecture will demonstrate that this theme can be equally fruitfully explored through a discussion of the depiction in his farm writings of large-scale commercial cattle undertakings and of the exploitation of “Homeboys”.
