That They May Face the Rising Sun – Film Screening
Join us for a powerful film screening that sheds light on untold stories facing a new dawn.
As part of Connacht Fleadh Week, Leitrim Comhaltas is delighted to host a special screening of That They May Face the Rising Sun in the beautiful surroundings of Lough Rynn.
Set in rural Ireland during the 1970s, the film follows a year in the life of a close-knit lakeside community. Adapted from the final novel by John McGahern, it tells the story of Joe and Kate Ruttledge, who return from London to settle near Joe’s childhood home. Through the changing seasons, everyday routines, and the rich relationships between neighbours, the film captures the warmth, humour, and enduring spirit of rural Irish life.
We are especially honoured to welcome Philip Dolan, who delivers a memorable and much-loved performance as Jamesie, one of the film’s most endearing characters. Philip will introduce the screening and share insights into the making of this acclaimed adaptation, offering audiences a unique opportunity to hear from someone who helped bring McGahern’s cherished characters to life on screen.
The setting could not be more appropriate. John McGahern was deeply fond of Mohill and spent the final years of his life living just outside the town. The landscapes, people, and sense of community that inspired his writing remain woven into the fabric of the area, making Lough Rynn a fitting venue for this special event.
Whether you are a fan of McGahern’s work, Irish cinema, or simply looking for an enjoyable evening during Connacht Fleadh Week, we invite you to come along, relax, and enjoy this beautiful film in great company.
